Mieke Koehoorn
Associate Professor, School of Population and Public Health, Director, Centre for Health and Environment Research, The University of British Columbia Professor Koehoorn's program of research focuses on occupational health. She is currently involved in research projects investigating a) occupational exposures and cardiovascular heart disease among paramedics and firefighters and b) physical risk factors for back injury in heavy industry. She is also involved in projects investigating the surveillance of occupational diseases (e.g., pneumoconioses) as well as evaluating workers' compensation polices, including the effect of surgical setting (private clinic or public hospital) and wait time incentives on return to work outcomes among injured workers. Additional research projects involve the mining and forestry industries, young workers and health care workers, and projects on musculoskeletal injuries and work-related asthma outcomes (e.g. asthma). She is also involved in some environmental research investigating the relationships between air pollution and cardiovascular disease (Border Air Quality Study) and between water quality and GI illness.
