Workshop - An Introduction to the Statistical Software Package R, May 27th, 2011

This introductory workshop will focus on how to use R to visualize data and perform basic statistical analyses.

Times: Friday May 27, 2011, 8:30am - 4:30pm

Location: Business and Economics Building Rm 108, University of Victoria, Victoria, BC

Course Fee: $265

Instructor

Dr. Isabella R. Ghement is a statistician and professional trainer in both introductory and advanced statistics. Her areas of research include  Environmetrics and Mixed Treatment Comparisons.  Dr. Ghement lectures on a part-time basis at the Sauder School of Business at UBC and is actively engaged in statistical consulting. She commonly offers customized workshops to a wide range of audiences from graduate students and researchers to professionals working in the field of biostatistics and bioinformatics.

Course description

Workshop Description

Through hands on lab activities, participants will learn the appropriate R commands for (i) constructing, customizing and saving simple and complex statistical graphs and (ii) conducting a variety of basic statistical analyses (e.g., t-tests, chi-square tests, simple linear regression analysis, one-way analysis of variance) and interpreting the resulting R output.

Workshop Outcomes

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Construct basic statistical graphs (e.g., histograms, boxplots, density plots, bar charts, normal probability plots, scatter plots).
  • Construct advanced statistical graphs (e.g., lattice graphs for displaying grouped data or multivariate data).
  • Customize and save graphical output produced by R.
  • Perform a variety of basic statistical procedures, including t-tests, chi-square tests, simple linear regression analysis and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and interpret the resulting R output.
  • Assess the adequacy of these statistical procedures through appropriate diagnostics and adopt remedial actions where warranted.

Workshop Format

The workshop is limited to 20 participants and consists of a series of short lectures and demonstrations followed by hands-on, interactive sessions for the participants.

Participants will be provided with:

  • A bound copy of the workshop notes as well as several workshop handouts;
  • A flash drive for use during the workshop containing electronic copies of all training materials used during the workshop;
  • 30 days of free workshop-related technical support following the workshop.

Prerequisite

Participants should have some basic knowledge of statistical graphs, an understanding of basic statistical procedures (e.g.: t-tests, chi-square tests, simple linear regression, analysis of variance) and familiarity with the Windows operating system.

Optional workshop requirements

Participants who wish to bring their own laptop and power cord for use during the workshop will be provided with instructions on how to download R and the necessary R packages approximately one week prior to workshop delivery. Please indicate your interest in this option at time of registration.

Audience

This workshop is ideal for participants who are new to R as well as R users who wish to expand their proficiency with this software package.
