Research objective:

Among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diesease (COPD) the most common cause of death is lung cancer. Data suggest lung cancer may be influenced by the use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins), respectively; animal models have shown that lung tumor formation may be inhibited by the administration of ICS and epidemiologic data have shown decreased incidence of cancer associated with the use of statins. The objectives of our proposed research are therefore to: a) determine the association between the use of ICS and/or statins and the development of lung cancer in a retrospective cohort study using administrative healthcare data; b) explore differences within a cohort of male and female COPD patients by identifying patients who also meet more restrictive COPD case definitions; c) determine the frequency of use of ICS and/or statins in the COPD population; d) determine if there are differential effects of ICS and/or statins on specific types of lung cancer; and f) examine if there is a differential effect across gender.
