BC Emergency Surgery Wait Times
To address the studys aim and objectives, we will focus on the following research questions:
1) Do the following hospital characteristics impact emergency surgery wait times?
a. Trauma centers vs community hospitals
b. Specialized services (organ transplants, c-sections, cardiac services)
2) Do the following admission characteristics impact emergency surgery wait times?
a. Patients admitted on weekdays vs. weekends
b. Patients admitted day time vs night time
My hypothesis is that hospital and admission characteristics do influence emergency surgery wait times. Specifically I suspect:
1a) trauma centers will have shorter wait times as they have emergency staff on hand to address emergency surgery.
1b) Patients admitted to facilities that do not perform the above specialized services will have shorter wait times, as these specialized surgeries often bump emergency surgeries.
2a) Patient admitted on weekdays will have shorter wait times as more staff are on hand to address emergencies
2b) Patients admitted during day time hours (0700 - 1900) will have shorter wait times as more staff are on hand to address emergencies.
